Dallas Dog Parks

Let’s Both Have Some Fun at the Dog Park!

Domestic dog playing in a dog park

Hello, humans! As you may have heard, my friends and I very much enjoy trips to the dog park. They allow us the chance to make new friends, burn off some excess energy, and get some need exercise! However, a well-meaning trip to the dog park can quickly turn sour if certain rules and regulations aren’t followed.

First and foremost, keep in mind that there are some dogs who simply don’t make very good playmates. It’s no fault of theirs; sometimes, they just can’t help it! So please, if your furry friend has issues with aggression, we kindly ask that you take him or her elsewhere. Also, if you have a female dog in heat or more than three dogs total, it’s probably not going to work out very well at the park.

For safety reasons, please remove any pinch, prong, or spiked collars before entering the play area. We can play a bit rough at times, and we wouldn’t want anyone to needlessly be hurt. Also, please keep any glass bottles at home so we don’t have to worry about cutting our paws. Finally, there is no food (dog or human) permitted in the dog park. We’re very sorry about this, but we’d rather not have to deal with any potential issues stemming from food aggression and the like. Some of us get very territorial when it comes to any sort of food!

Finally, we need to talk about leashes. Obviously, you don’t want to have to put the leash on us, as it would ruin the point of going to the park! That said, you humans need to pay extra-close attention to us when we’re not on our leashes. The moment you notice any out-of-control or aggressive behavior, the offending canines must be removed from the off-leash area. We hate to draw a hard line like that, but the safety of everyone and everything in the park must take priority.

This may sound like quite a bit, but we make these rules so that all dogs and humans can enjoy their time at the dog park. But now that you know the rules, you’re free to visit any of Dallas’s four dog parks:

And of course, if you want to make sure your furry friend is healthy enough to visit and enjoy the dog park, call Cornerstone Animal Clinic to make an appointment!

Happy Tuesday, Friends!

Do you want to know what I could really go for right now? Chicken, sweet and juicy chicken. There is nothing better than sitting down to a nice meal of melt in your mouth chicken. But sometimes Chicken can get annoying to make. Which is why I am posting this Chicken Cinnamon Cookie Recipe so everyone can have healthy chicken treats handy (to give me ;)) all the time! These cookies make 1-2 dozen medium sized cookies and the recipe comes from our friends at Canine Journal.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 cup of organic flour
  • 1 cup of low sodium or homemade organic chicken broth
  • 3/4 cup of oatmeal
  • 1/4 corn starch
  • 1/4 cup of cooking oil
  • 1 tablespoon of baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons of organic cinnamon

How to make them:

    1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees
    2. Add all the ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly
    3. Flatten out the dough and use cookie cutters to cut out your cookies or break off small pieces of dough and roll them into the cookie shapes
    4. Place the treats on a greased baking tray
    5. Bake for 20 minutes
    6. Give Bernie a Dozen of them

Okay, that last one isn’t completely necessary, but I wouldn’t stop you! Share your experience once you’ve made this! Feel free to post below, Tweet, Facebook, or add us on Instagram!

Chef Bernie’s July Recipe

By Bernie's Blog No Comments

Bernie here! Hope you all had a wonderful May & June!  It’s getting mighty warm in Dallas, which means it’s my favorite season, PICNIC SEASON, *ahem* Summer!

Since you’re probably thinking “What’s Bernie’s favorite thing to do in the summer?” Wait no longer! I’ll tell you. Besides playing with my sister Jocelyn, I love going out for walks, chasing balls, napping, protecting the yard from squirrels and rabbits, and spending time with my family especially when Dr. Morse is grilling…I can smell the burgers now mmm.

Sorry I had to take a break and go get myself a treat and gather myself, back to what I was saying. Summer is a time for picnics and outside parties, everyone gets to eat delicious foods, but what about us dogs? Well, no need to worry. I took the liberty of gathering some tasty and healthy, all family member recipes to share with you all, but just a warning, I may start drooling all over the screen while I write this one out.

The recipe for this month is SLIDERS / BUNS and it comes from our friends over at Cesar’s Way:

Sliders:

You Will Need

  • 1/2 lb of ground Turkey (yum)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup chopped parsley
  • 1 Tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil

How To Make Them

    1. Stir together the ground turkey, egg, and parsley
    2. Use your hands and mold 1/2 in thick patties
    3. Heat up your grill to medium and brush the grate with oil
    4. Grill the patties for about 10 minutes, only turn once
    5. And of course, with any grilling, let it cool before serving…you don’t want to burn anyone’s mouth!
    6. Bring me one of these

Sweet Potato Buns

You will need:

        • 1 medium sweet potato
        • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) olive oil
        • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) dried rosemary

How to make them:

        1. Cut potato into 1/4-inch (2/3 cm) thick slices; toss with oil and rosemary.
        2. Place slices on grill and close lid.
        3. Cook about 8 minutes per side, until tender.
        4. Place sliders on buns and let cool before serving.
        5. Most Important Step. Bring me one of these too!

Combine the two and voila! You have yourself a tasty meal that not only I can enjoy, but you can too! Stay tuned for next month when I share the next recipe with you! I am going to play with Jocelyn now! Share in the comments when you’ve made a recipe and let us know how you liked it!

Happy Monday My Non-Four-Legged Friends!!

Your favorite pup is back in action for June’s blog post! I just did some research on my pawputer, went right to Poogle and gasped at the weather. It looks like it’s going to be in the mid-90s in Dallas this week! Now, don’t get me wrong I love the warm weather, but it can get really hot for everyone if you don’t stay hydrated and get plenty of shade. One great way to stay chilled is a nice ole popsicle, my favorite kind are the cherry flavored ones! Now you may be thinking to yourself “what kind of popsicles are safe for doggies?”, no worries that’s what I have dedicated this month’s blog to! This recipe comes from my friend Megan at Today’s Mama.

If you don’t have a dog you can go adopt one from our local shelter, just click here to view the dogs and pups that need a loving home. If you can’t, these popsicles are safe enough to feed your kids. That’s right, children! We can both have them 🙂

Okay so, what kind of treats are these? Delicious ones! Haha.

Here’s the recipe:

What You Need:

  • 32oz of Yogurt (plain or vanilla)
  • 1 Large Banana
  • 2-3 Tablespoons of Peanut Butter (without xylitol*)
  • 1 Tablespoon of Honey
  • 2 ice-cube trays

How To Make Them

  1. Dump Yogurt Into a large bowl
  2. Put Banana, Peanut Butter, and Honey in bowl
  3. Mix with blender
  4. Pour mix into the ice cube trays
  5. Freeze for 10 minutes
  6. Once frozen place treats into a Tupperware container and store in your freezer
  7. Give your pooch or child a taste test!

Well, that is it for this month! Stay Tuned For Next Month’s Culinary Treat By Chef Bernie.

Share in the comments when you’ve made the recipe and let us know how your family liked it!

* Xylitol is a sweetener found in many foods, safe for humans, but when ingested by pets it can cause seizures, liver failure, and death. This is extremely toxic to dogs. For a list of foods that contain xylitol, please click here. If your pet consumes xylitol contact your local vet immediately.

March 3rd–“If Pets Had Thumbs Day”

By Bernie's Blog No Comments

Hi everyone, Bernie, here! It’s sad to see that the holidays are all over, but I sure am looking forward to the spring time. Cool temperatures and swimming. Not that we don’t have cool temperatures now, even though it’s supposed to be cold. I wish I could say Brrr…

Anyways, we’re here to celebrate the day of March 3rd. No, it’s not my birthday. But thank you for thinking of me. However, it is “If pets had thumbs day.” What are some things we could do by ourselves?

  • We could take ourselves outside, that way we could come and go as we please.
  • We could start a blog.
  • We could feed ourselves.
  • We could hitchhike to our friend’s houses. Not sure that that would be faster than running there.
  • We could text our pawrents while they’re at work. I’m sure they would enjoy hearing about how you got into the trash and then cleaned it up.

National Pet Obesity Awareness Day-October 12th, 2016

By Bernie's Blog No Comments

Hi everyone, Bernie here!

It’s October, and boy oh boy has this year flown by!

As you may know, I am an avid fan of eating…treats, my own food, my sister’s food…everything! With my love for food comes the responsibility of maintaining my handsome figure. I really should not be eating as many treats as I do, but let’s face it, how could you resist my cute face?

To help you maintain your pet’s healthy weight, her are a few tips:

  • Did someone say dog park?  I get it…not all of us enjoy time with other dogs as much as some, but your dog should really be getting at least 30 minutes of exercise a day.  They could join you for a walk or a run!  That sounds like fun! (Followed by a long nap)
  • Your dog should avoid eating table scraps, no matter how much they like cleaning up after their 2-legged siblings!
  • Dogs are not really good at portion control, so they need their humans to help feed them the right amount of food.
  • Here are some healthy treats that your dog will love (in moderation of course):
-Carrots–crunching on these orange sticks are great for our teeth!
-Apples–an excellent source of vitamins A and C…just make sure you remove the core and seeds before giving them
    to your dog
-Canned Green Beans–these are a treat that surprisingly most dogs love!
-Plain Rice Cakes–yes, the boring styrofoam ones that humans don’t like, dogs actually love!
  • For cats that are overweight, increase their playtime activity.  If you’re brave enough, you can even teach them to walk using a harness!
  • A cat’s diet is very important in keeping their figure in tip top shape.  Try to feed your cat a specific measured amount at designated times instead of leaving food out all day, which will help increase their metabolism.
  • Some fun toys that cats might enjoy are: a laser pointer, a pole with a string and a feather attached (we have some of these available for purchas) or catnip stuffed toys.

Bernie’s Brotherly Advice

By Bernie's Blog No Comments

Hi Everyone!

Please accept my sincere apawlogies for not blogging a lot lately.  My baby sister Jocelyn has been keeping me VERY busy!  I really didn’t understand how much work it is to be a big brother!  My sister is growing up so fast and I’m trying to teach her all of the important things she needs to know and do.  As you can see in the picture, she is really good at panting!  I’ve also taught her about going on walks, napping, checking our yard for squirrels, and looking out for delivery trucks…and especially the mailman.  She is catching on pretty well!

joss and bernie1 resize

We’ve also talked a lot about sharing, and boy is she great at it!  Until she came along, I had never even tasted macaroni and cheese, Goldfish, watermelon and lots of other yummy snacks.  But now I get to sample them all the time thanks to my sweet sister.  My favorite spot to hang out is right next to her high chair.  The food just comes flying off it!  I especially love having Cheerios again…they remind me of when I was a tiny rescue puppy and my Dad was training me to obey commands.  Now I find Cheerios that Jocelyn puts aside for me pretty much everywhere!  She is the best.

However, my Mom and Dad have warned my sister about certain foods she is NOT supposed to share (some of them are even her favorites like avocado!) so I thought I’d post a reminder about the big ‘no-no’ foods for dogs.  Remember to keep these out of your furbaby’s reach at all times:

Avocados
Candy & Gum
Chocolate
Coffee & Caffeine
Onions
Garlic
Grapes
Milk and Dairy products
Macadamia Nuts
Peaches, Plums & Persimmons
Raisins
Yeast Dough

If you think your dog has gotten into any of the above, let us know right away!

Well, I have to get back to work.  Between my full-time job as clinic greeter and being a big brother, I don’t have a lot of spare time but I’ll try to write again soon.

Until then, I hope you have a pawsome day!

BERNIE WANTS TO WISH YOU A
HAPPY NATIONAL DOG DAY!!

Hey, everyone! I know we haven’t talked in a while. But today’s my favorite day, because everyone gets to celebrate me and every other dog in the world!

Because dogs are so cool, I’ve included some awesome dog facts below. Hopefully these pique your interest and you can share them with everyone you talk to today!

One: Labradors are the most popular dog in the United States.

Two: Dogs see a lot better than humans at night.

Three: And they don’t see in black and white. They see in various shades of blue, gray and dark yellows.

Four: Dogs’ only sweat glands are between their paw pads.

Five: At the end of the Beatles’ song “A Day in the Life”, a high-pitched dog whistle was recorded by Paul McCartney for his sheepdog.

Six: Corgi is Welsh for “dwarf dog”.

Seven: The reason dogs curl up in a ball while they sleep, is because of an age-old instinct to keep themselves warm and to protect vital organs while they sleep.

Eight: Dalmatian puppies are born completely white and develop their spots over time.

Nine: George Lucas modeled the Ewoks from Star Wars after his family dog.

Ten: Whiskers are used as sensing devices; some dogs even use them to see if they’ll be able to fit into small spaces.

These are just a few awesome facts that I’ve discovered. I hope you share them with all your friends! And make sure to pet a few dogs when you have some free time!
